Freshpet Dog Food Complaints: Freshpet Making Dogs Sick?

Freshpet, a market-leading manufacturer of mostly organic, refrigerated pet food, has received complaints from dog owners who say their pets have become sick after consuming the brand’s products.

Freshpet Making Dogs Sick

Freshpet dog food complaints

Most people agree that Freshpet has good flavor and it’s easy to prepare, but many are saying that their dogs are experiencing diarrhea or vomiting after eating it.

According to Freshpet Dog Food reviews, the most common symptoms are “vomiting” and “diarrhea.” One customer reports his dog had constant vomiting and diarrhea for two days after he started feeding him Freshpet Dog Food. The customer says he contacted the company’s customer service department, but they refused to issue a refund or tell him what was wrong with the product.

Many people are also complaining about the high cost of this brand of dog food. The price per pound is almost double what other brands charge and some pet parents say they’re seeing no improvement in their pets’ health.

In several posts on Twitter, pet owners described their sick dogs as having suffered “horrible diarrhea” after eating Freshpet dog food. Many of the social media comments were accompanied by photos of blood in dogs’ stool or vomit.

“My dog is now violently ill,” one reviewer wrote. “I’m sure it’s the food because I recently switched to another brand and he’s fine.”

“This is the worst pet food ever. My labrador got sick and started to throw up every time he ate it. I talked to the company and they told me that if he was getting sick then he must have a sensitive stomach and maybe I should try another flavor.”

“We’ve been feeding them this for about a year now, so to hear that there are other dogs getting sick over this makes me want to stop immediately.”

Is there a recall on Freshpet?

Freshpet announced a voluntary recall of some dog food products in June 2021 due to potential salmonella contamination.

If your pet has had a reaction to Freshpet, please call 866-789-3737. Freshpet takes every complaint seriously and investigates all complaints thoroughly to ensure that no pet is ever exposed to anything harmful in their products.

All pets may have sensitivities to certain ingredients and experience an occasional upset stomach; however, owners can be proactive if they suspect their pet is experiencing an issue with their diet or the pet food product by contacting the veterinarian first.

Positive reviews

“I have been using Freshpet for over a year now and I can say that it is the best dog food I have ever used. My dogs love it, and it has saved me so much money on vet bills. Their coats have never looked better, and they just seem happier overall. I am sold on this food for life, and recommend it to anyone who will listen!”

“Freshpet has been so good for my dogs’ health that I recommend it to all my pet-owning friends. I have a friend who tried Freshpet after her husky was diagnosed with cancer. The vet recommended switching to a fresh diet to boost immunity during treatment. After the surgery was successful and the cancer was gone, she continued giving her dog Freshpet because she wanted him to stick with healthy foods as he got older.”

“I have a very picky dog, and she loves Freshpet. She will only eat certain brands (she’s the princess of the house), and Freshpet is one of them. It is not hard for me to get her to eat her food. Freshpet is generally more expensive than other brands, but for my dog, it’s worth it. She seems to love the taste, which is probably why she acts like it’s a treat.”

“I have tried a lot of dog treats but none compared to Freshpet. My dogs go crazy for them and I love knowing that they are good for their tummies. They come in flavors that my dogs love and the price is right. I like that they are made with real ingredients and not a bunch of ingredients I can’t pronounce. I would recommend Freshpet to anyone who has a dog.”

“I have been using Freshpet since I got my dog 5 years ago. The ingredients are really good and I love the fact that it is made with organic chicken. I have tried other brands and they just don’t compare to Freshpet. My dog loves it!”

“Freshpet is an amazing product. I have 2 pugs and they absolutely love it. This one is a little more expensive than the other brands but it’s totally worth it. It doesn’t smell like wet dog when you open the bag and it doesn’t stink up your fridge.”

  1. I’d been feeding one of my dogs Fresh Pet for a couple years but something has had to have happened with the quality. For two weeks my dog and now pup have been having mucus/loose poops. I finally have given up on the brand and cook for them myself.

    1. Yes. The chicken shredded loose type in a bag, now is causing mucus diarrhea in my Pug. He used to eat it without a problem, but now it also has a funny unfresh smell. I returned one of the 4.5 pound bags, and he does better on the solid one. I called the company and I received a coupon. I purchased another bag with the coupon because they were out of the solid one, and my Pug has profuse mucousy diarrhea again. Something is wrong with it now.

  2. Our dog has eaten FreshPet for a year and loved it. Now she gets sick on it and is very hungry but when she eats it she throws up.
We even tried a different kind of FreshPet.
We are done and getting another brand.
She was 14.5 lbs and is down to 13 lbs 2 ounces.

  3. I gave my 10-year-old Aussie half a serving of the fresh pet food alongside his normal kibble and he had bloody diarrhea for 2 days. It was terrible. I was given this food from my dad who just lost his dog and now I’m wondering if this food was the cause of his dog dying.
